Trompe L'oeil (tromp-LOY') is a French term that literally
means to "fool the eye". This three-thousand-year old art style creates the optical
illusion of dimension with nearly photographic realism. Trompe L'oeil is an art form
that deceives the viewer into thinking that the objects in the painting are real.
Every tear in a photograph, every fold in a drape and every human image is meticulously
reproduced. As a result, the objects depicted are both visually accurate and lifelike.
This five day course will give a comprehensive understanding of the principles of light and
shadow as well as to develop the artist's skills to execute these principles.
Structured to accommodate those with little formal fine arts training to professionals in
their trade, this class will move at different paces. By the end of this class, every
student will have a through understanding of Trompe L'oeil and will be able to include
this style of decorative painting in his or her portfolio.
The course will begin with a study of light and dark rendered in charcoal and proceed to
executing finish samples in acrylics. In addition, several short lectures will be
given on color, perspective, design of mural, scale and proportion.
Trompe L'oeil: The Elements will include:
Stone architecture

Architectural marble pillars/columns
Illusional gilded capitals
